Why I really wake up at 5 a.m.
For years when our kids were young I’d wake up and hit the ground running, my mind a whirlwind of ‘to do’s’. As soon as I woke up I was already feeling behind. I would go to sleep worrying about the next day. The joys of trying to be a SuperMom. I never felt relaxed. I had to make a change; I was burning out, fast.
It has taken me years to learn one truth, that is in absolutely no way selfish: if you want to take care of everyone and everything – you have to take care of yourself first. And offer no apologies.
Nowadays I wake up, spend the first two minutes – consciously take the very first two minutes – thinking about the top three things I am thankful for in my life, and why; having gratitude for what I have, not focussing on what is lacking. This feeling of “having” – not “lacking” – makes a huge difference in my perspective and how I show up for the day.
My time from 5 – 7 a.m. is MINE. It is wonderful. No one needs me, the world hasn’t yet woken. It is uninterrupted, non-distracted, peaceful time. I work from ... realistically from 5:15 – 6:45 a.m. using the Pomodoro Technique – working for spurts of 25 minutes at a time, then a break. I work only on the business in this time, directed by a list made the night before. Always. I get more done, more quality work done, in those first two hours than the rest of the day combined.
When the world comes to life around 7 a.m., I am already feeling like a superstar as I have checked all my “you feel guilty if you don’t get them done” things. Best way to start your day.
Try the next few days to change your first five minutes. Be glad for what you have. Do your have-to’s first. Plan your list the night before. When you change your mood, you change your thinking. You change your actions, and you change your life.
